Recent Random Thoughts

I haven't been keeping up on the news, but I have been keeping up on some sports news.  This year I got coaxed into joining a Fantasy Football league which has forever ruined my enjoyment of football.  Instead of rooting for teams now I'm constantly just looking up individual stats.

But, now that I'm out of it, I'm rooting for not only my favorite player, but a team that's been in shambles yet manages to stay unbeaten--the Colts.  So in light of that, some recent thoughts (and if you're not a football fan, you really should be!):

1.  What's the goal - Commentators have been arguing that the Colts, instead of benching key players to keep them fresh for the long haul towards winning another Superbowl, should keep playing Peyton Manning.  Why?  Because although you can't guarantee a perfect season, if you've come so far unbeaten, at least pursue perfection.  Many speculate that the current coach, Jim Caldwell, will bench key players as was the protocol under Tony Dungy.

I think you have to really consider goals in whatever you accomplish.  In the case of the Colts, if your goal is to win a Superbowl it only makes sense to give yourself the best chance by giving key players rest--the team is already plagued with injuries.  If you want the perfect season, then do accordingly.  No matter what you do there's always going to be criticism--whether you win a Superbowl or not.  Do what's true to your goals and gives you the best chance to secure them.

2.  If it doesn't work, take what's good - Yesterday, the Dallas Cowboys tried something new.  They gave everyone 3-D glasses to watch the game from their ginormous screen.  People complained of nauseousness, some thought it was a hassle to take their glasses on and off during the game, and others just thought it was complete nonsense since they had paid to come watch a live game.

I think they were just trying to be innovative.  It may not have worked, and it may be smarter next time to scrap the idea, but in light of the concept I think there's some good to be salvaged.  What about 3-D use only on replays?  You can't watch a replay live anyway!  It's funny, though, no one seems to have complained about gigantic 3-D cheerleaders.

3.  Surprise, Surprise - As you may already know, Tiger Woods is all over the news.  It's even been said by the likes of Dr. Drew (via Twitter) that Woods may be a candidate for sex addiction.  It's sad... really mournful to note that scandals like this one are so commonplace.  But, at the same time it shouldn't surprise anyone how fortune and fornication can tear down empires.  You would think people would learn from the mistakes of others, but that's how insidious our sin is, really.
